God has given our congregation a beautiful place for its worship services, for which we owe him praise and thanks. But what truly makes this house a lovely place is the glory of our Savior, who comes to us in His Word and the Holy Sacraments and gives us, in the grace which He lets shine upon us here, a foretaste of eternal life. After the close of the service the pastors present offered their congratulations, greetings and blessings received in writing were read aloud, and finally thanks were expressed to all who had taken part in the building. In splendid weather, which God gave us for this day, our celebration continued with a gathering in the woods, dedicated especially to the memory of the 70th anniversary of our brass band (Posaunenchor). Pastor Heicke of Dreihausen brought the exhortation of Psalm 150 to praise the Lord vividly to life in the hearts of the large audience and showed us what it means: "Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!" The brass bands performed, together and individually, many beautiful songs, which alternated with choir singing to the delight of young and old. The undersigned gave a brief review of the founding history of the jubilee band, pointing out the blessing and significance of our brass bands for our congregations. With thanks to God, who had given us this beautiful day, the celebration closed. In the evening we gathered once more in the town hall, where the youth presented a serious play, framed by songs and hymns. The collections from the morning and afternoon services brought in the fine sum of almost 800 DM; we also received a generous donation for the later purchase of bells. Our congregation looks back this year on its 75th anniversary. Through the faithful service of its longtime pastor, D. H. Z. Stallmann, it once received much blessing. May it preserve this blessing in the future as well, and may it be granted anew, again and again, in its new house of God! Song Evenings and Mission Festival in Hörpel Our mission festival this year, on Sunday, July 9th, was preceded by a singing week which our dear cantor Paul Kretzschmar of Wittingen held with our church choir. This was fine preparation for the festival, which is so important for congregational life and for the congregation's witness in the world. Much singing was done in the evenings, and much was demanded of the singers. But all took part with joy, the old as well as the young. Our choir has grown, especially through the newly confirmed, so that we now have 30 singers. These were splendid evenings, in which we sang to the glory of God and to our own joy, and prepared ourselves for the festival. We would recommend such preparatory singing weeks to all congregations as an example to follow. For the day of joy of the mission festival, the barn of our farmer H. Dreß had been prepared and beautifully decorated with birch greenery. Our brass players, reinforced by the Sottrum choir, sounded the well-known melodies in the morning hour. Meanwhile all the dear guests arrived by bus, bicycle, wagon, and on foot — to our joy also a bus from Fintel, District of Rotenburg, with members of the refugee mission church and from the congregations of the sister free church of Sottorf and Soltau. The barn, with its 500 seats, became full. Some still sat outside. After the welcoming address by the local pastor, Pastor Theo Willkomm of Minden preached on the prophetic word Isaiah 45:5–15, which begins with the words: "I am the Lord, and there is none else; there is no God besides Me." This one, mighty, eternal, and merciful God builds His kingdom in the world despite all the resistance of evil powers. He claims the redeemed people: "Bring my sons and my daughters, the work of my hands, to Me." To serve this God, to further His work, and to lead immortal souls to "His Anointed," the Lord Christ, to whom the deliverer "Cyrus" points in the prophecy, is our holy mission task. After the midday break, during which the congregation members in Hörpel and Evendorf gladly practiced hospitality, Pastors Griesheimer of Brunsbrock and Rothfuchs of Hermannsburg preached — the former on the word from John 12: "Sir, we would see Jesus," the latter on Psalm 48:13–15. Whoever has truly beheld in faith the Savior and Redeemer of the world, the Lord Jesus Christ, has seen the glory of God and must also show this glory to others. Whoever loves Jesus also loves "Zion," the church of God. God Himself has built our beloved Lutheran church as His Zion; her towers are Law and Gospel, Word and Sacrament, her walls the preaching of the Word and the confessions, her palaces our churches and houses of God. We must diligently preserve the treasures of our church and carry them further out into the world. The festival came to its close with the closing address of our pastor on the psalm word 89:2: "I will sing of the mercy of the Lord for ever, and with my mouth will I proclaim His faithfulness to all generations." Our dear church choirs also diligently helped to raise God's praise and proclaim His Word. The most beautiful thing we heard from them was surely the chorale motet "Seek, whoever will, another goal," which Paul Kretzschmar himself composed, and which moved us most deeply. When the men's and women's voices exulted to one another in antiphonal song: "My heart's crown, my sun of joy, shall You, Lord Jesus, remain," one already felt almost in heaven, where we shall then behold and praise Him forever. The festival collection, designated for the synodal treasury and the Bleckmar Mission, came to DM 883.—. For those who did not need to set out on their journey home right away, an organ concert in the church by Cantor Kretzschmar formed a particularly beautiful conclusion. Ernst Storch. Church Dedication in Berlin-Steglitz July 23, 1950, was a day of joy for the Evangelical Lutheran Trinity congregation in Berlin-Steglitz. The space located on the ground floor of their church was put into use through a festival service. In August 1943 the beautiful church burned out completely as the result of an air raid; only the outer walls remained standing. The congregation was provided — as the first in our free church to receive this — with a wooden emergency church by fellow believers in the faith, and with heartfelt thanks it has used this until now for its services. But the rebuilding of the destroyed church remained the goal which the congregation pursued with great zeal. With God's help it succeeded in restoring the roof and tower of the church and in creating a church hall on the ground floor, which fulfills its purpose well. The new interior furnishing is indeed simple, but beautiful and functional. Thus the congregation is very glad and thankful that it has this new church home. This was also expressed at the church dedication service. In the barrack church, Präses P. H. Petersen, the pastor of the congregation, held a brief farewell ceremony. Then the new church hall was opened. Following the dedication reading and the dedication prayer, the undersigned delivered the festival sermon on Haggai 2:1–10. The greetings and blessings of the sister church and its Berlin congregations were conveyed by Superintendent Grube, who took part in the celebration along with Church Council member Lic. Schulz. May God richly bless the congregation in its new home through His Word and the holy Sacraments! May it also succeed, with His help, in soon restoring and putting into use the actual church nave! A. Stallmann, Pastor From the Refugee Mission Church Church Building in Blomberg, Lippe-Detmold In March 1946 Pastor L. Zielke held the first service for a small group of refugees from the former Lutheran free church in Poland, who had been swept away to Lippe-Detmold. Together with other refugees there were 60 listeners. Quickly, in the midst of a Reformed church district that was inwardly foreign to them, a Lutheran refugee congregation gathered there, now numbering over 600 souls. A great difficulty existed in the complete lack of a suitable place for worship. They had to gather in various poorly suited halls. In the spring of 1948 Pastor Klumbies was called as the permanent pastor of this congregation, which took the name Eben Ezer congregation. Through the advocacy of the representatives of the Wisconsin Synod, Mission Director Bodamer and Pastor Maas, it was possible to obtain from this Lutheran church over there the necessary funds for building a church and a parsonage. On Easter Day of this year the cornerstone was laid. The congregation hopes and prays to God that it may soon move into its new church.
