# The Lutheran Pioneer_St. Louis_1928_S85 # Machine transcription, uncorrected — CHI Digital Archive (demonstration) THE LUTHERAN PIONEER. 85 tion service, attended by about 20 adults. There were 8 baptisms and 7 confirmations during 1927. The congregation now numbers 36 souls, 24 of whom are communicants. Another class of adults is being prepared for confirmation, also a class of children, the latter receiving instruction from the missionary twice a week. The big work here, however, is being done by our teacher, Mr. Klawitter, who spends five full days a week surrounded by 40 Negro children, try- ing to instil into their minds the four R’s. I shall not, nor could I, even if I had the time and in- clination, try to enumerate the difficulties under which Mr. Klawitter is laboring. If he had the least cooperation on the part of the parents of these children, his work might be lightened to some ex- tent. Yet the fruits are beginning to show them- selves. Several children have been baptized, and the first class will soon be confirmed. The members of Immanuel are still an example for many white Lutherans, so far as giving for the church is con- cerned. They keep up their own running expenses and pay $10 monthly toward the salary of the mis- sionary.
