Fuerbringer, D. D., Th. Engelder, D. D., and P. BE. Kretzmann, Ph. D., D.D. Concordia Publishing House, St. Louis, Mo. S48 pages. Strong cloth binding. Price, $4.50. The subtitle of this cyclopedia indicates the compre- hensiveness of the work: “A Handbook of Religious In- formation, with Special Reference to the History, Doc- trine, Work, and Usages of the Lutheran Church.” The fact that this wide range of information was to be com- pressed into no more than 850 pages required careful selection and extraordinary condensation. The editors have proved themselves to be masters of brevity and con- densation. We find this particularly to be the case with the doctrinal articles. Again and again we were astounded at the masterly manner in which pages of information were condensed into a short paragraph. Of great value owners of this work will find the articles on secret so- cieties. We think that extremely good judgment was shown in giving so much space to the secret socicties. Missions are also fully treated, though we were a little disappointed in failing to find certain titles. Hymnologists are given a great deal of space, so that he that is inter- ested in the authors of our hymns will be able to get de- sirable information. ‘The “Roster of Officers and Profes- sors of the Missouri Synod” is misnamed, since in this “roster” are names of men that are not officials or pro- fessors of the Missouri Synod. The thought has come to us that the initialing of the articles would have giyen an element of authenticity to the articles which is lacking when they are unsigned. The initialing of the articles, of course, would have necessitated the giving of a com- plete list of editors, associate editors, and other contribu- tors. Every user of the work will again and again find in it proofs of a high degree of scholarship and unmis- takable signs of careful editing. May the book find the ready sale it deserves and thus encourage the publishers to put books of similar value on the market! Explicacion Concisa del Catecismo Menor del Dr. Mar- tin Lutero. These are three publications, put out by our brethren in Argentina for the purpose of making our Church known to the Spanish-speaking natives of that country and gain- ing them for the truth. We admire our brethren for their aggressiveness and pray that God may richly bless their endeavors. . We spoke of the last-named tract in our June Book Table. We would here once more call attention to its simple and lucid presentation of the doctrine of justifica- tion and the simplicity of the language used. Just these ‘qualities will make the tract a powerful missionary agency. The book first mentioned above brings Luther’s Small Catechism on its first thirty-three pages, | followed by a concise explanation of the Small Catechism, covering 117 pages. As far ns the reviewer’s limited knowledge of Spanish’ goes, the exposition is a translation of the of- ficial Catechism of the Missouri Synod (Schwan). The second book mentioned is a small Lutheran hym- nal. It brings a fine selection of twenty-five hymns. "Most of the hymns are translations of our own Lutheran hymns. F.J.L.
