Daily Lessons from the Writings of Martin Luther. By John Theodore Mueller. The Macmillan Company, New York. Mo- rocco binding. 375 pages. Price, $2.50. May also be ordered from Concordia Publishing House, St. Louis, Mo. Had it been the compiler’s chief purpose to familiarize the minds of his readers with Luther’s position on the principal doctrinal and moral questions in Luther’s own simple, clear, and eloquent words, we could assure him that he had admirably succeeded in his attempt; for Five Minutes Daily with Luther brings a fine summary of Luther’s principal teachings in the great Reformer’s own terse and forcible language. We feel that this par- ticular feature of the book will strongly commend it to many. But as the name implies, the compiler’s primary purpose was to give to his readers a devotional guide con- sisting of readings from Luther’s writings. For this rea- son he has chosen for each day of the year a passage of Scripture and a short exposition of the selected passage from Luther’s published works, to which has been ap- pended a hymn stanza. There is no Christian who may not peruse with great spiritual profit the brief page of each daily meditation, so happily selected by Professor Mueller from the rich treasures of Luther’s writings. Apart from its contents, the handsome leather binding of Five Minutes Daily with Luther particularly commends it as a gift-book. Verhandlungen der neunundzwanzigsten Versammlung der Ey.-Luth. Walther League General Offices, 6438 Eggles- ton Ave., Chicago, Ill. Single copies, gratis; bulk orders, $5.00 per hundred. Every pastor who is persuaded of the importance of Conservation will have a copy of this booklet always at hand, since with its help he will be able properly to direct the young people of his flock, and others who intend to leave home, to those who will take an interest in their welfare in other localities, and thus he will do his part toward preventing any loss to the Church by their change of domicile. This care of the Lutheran traveler on the part of our Walther League should endear it to the hearts of us all, not to speak of the many other most commend- able activities it displays in the interest of Christ and His kingdom.
