MARCH, 1912. No. 3 Jesus Lifted Up. A few days before His death on the cross, Jesus said: “And I, if I be lifted up, will draw all men unto me.” And we are told that “He said this signifying what death He should die,’ John 12, 32. 33. Before this He had already said to Nico- demus: “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life,” John 3, 14. 15. And to the Jews who would not believe that He was the promised Messiah, He said: “When ye have lifted up the Son of Man, then shall ye cna that I am He,” John 8, 28. Jesus was lifted up when He was nailed to the cross and then lifted up to endure the most bitter. sufferings and to die the most shameful death on the accursed tree; for it is written: “Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree.” ' But why did Jesus say: “If I be lifted up, I will draw all men unto me”? What relation is there between -His being lifted up on the cross and Christ Crucified. 5 His sublime declaration: “I will draw all men Testa!
