# Synodical Conference Convention Proceedings_St. Louis Missouri_1954_S190 # Machine transcription, uncorrected — CHI Digital Archive (demonstration) 190 Proceedings of the Forty-Third Convention, Advisory: Rev. John Brenner and Rev. H. A. Grueber, D. D. Your Committee begs leave to submit the following report of its work during the past biennium: 1. Re the B.S. V. While we realize the value of the R.S. V. for study and com- parison, we would caution our pastors and congregations relative to the use of this version of Holy Scriptures in the lectern and the pulpit. 2. Re Synodical Conference Resolution on the Common Con- fession. The Wisconsin Synod members of your Committee stated that the spirit in which their Synod’s objections of conscience to the Common Confession and other matters were met at the 1952 Con- vention of the Synodical Conference compelled them to declare themselves to be in statu confessionis in an action taken after the close of the convention. It was made clear that in this statement the Wisconsin Synod representatives spoke only for themselves, and declared that they were continuing their present relations in the Synodical Conference under protest. This declaration was sub- sequently approved by synodical resolution, October 8 and 9, 1953. (Wis. Syn. Proceedings 1953, pages 104 and 105.) : Your Committee heard objections of the Wisconsin and Nor- wegian Synod members on this matter. Their complaint was that the substitute motion “to postpone all further action until said Part II has been completed and presented to the tonstituent synods of the Synodical Conference and to the American Lutheran Church” did not take cognizance of the Scripture-grounded objections to continued negotiations with the ALC and to the claim that the Common Confession was a settlement of the doctrines therein enumerated. (Nor. Syn. Report 1951, pages 54 and 55; Wis. Syn. Report 1951, page 147, Resolution 4.) These matters were discussed at length without any satisfactory settlement. 3. Re Participation in Unionistic Activities. Complaints were made before your Committee that there had been such participation on the part of some Missouri Synod men. These complaints were discussed at length. Your Committee is agreed that any such participation, in viola- tion of our recognized principles re unionism (Cf. Syn. Conf. Re- port, 1950, pages 133 and 134: “Re Unionism and Re Offense”), should be avoided. Such violations should continue to receive the careful consideration and attention of all our members, particularly our officials. 4. Re Titus 3:10. \ A study of this passage was made on the basis of co-essays prepared by the Rev. S. G. Mazak and President C. M. Gullerud. Two points of view were presented, the one limiting the text in its application to heretics within the fellowship, the other apply- ing it to anyone who clings to error despite sufficient admonition. To date your Committee has not found itself in a position to report agreement. iN
