We have reviewed the system of internal control and the accounting procedures of the organization and, without making a detailed audit of all of the transactions, have examined or tested accounting records and other supporting evidence, by methods and to the extent we deemed appropriate. Our examination was conducted in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards applicable in the circumstances and included all the procedures which we considered necessary, except that we did not confirm the notes receivable in the Church Extension Fund by direct com- munication with the debtors or examine the records of the operating units located outside of Saint Louis, Missouri. In addition, the records have been maintained on a cash receipts and dis- bursements basis and consequently, the financial statements prepared under such circumstances do not portray the Missionary Board’s financial position at any given date, nor the results of its operations for any definite period without making certain adjustments to the cash basis figures. Deferred charges in the amount of $11,681.84, include the June, 1954, expenditures of the African Missions aggre- gating $7,698.57, which it is the practice to record in the month the report is received, namely July, and items in the amount of $3,983.27 to be charged to the 1954—1955 budget. Unrecorded and unpaid expenditures applicable to the months of May and June, 1954, aggregated $2,717.57. The Missionary Board’s investment in physical properties, other than a dormi- tory for girls at Selma, Alabama, and a church at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, aggregating $44,000, has not been recorded on the records, and no attempt was made at this time to determine the value of all other property owned by The Missionary Board. In our opinion, subject to the foregoing comments, the accompanying balance sheet and related financial statements present fairly the financial position of The Missionary Board as of June 30, 1954, and the financial transactions for the fiscal year then ended prepared on the basis of the accounting methods presently employed. 2b Ss St. Louis, Missouri Tracy B.
