Synodical Conference of North America, 1954 147 St. Paul’s, New Orleans, La. We have seen many individuals take the medals of the Virgin and of other saints from the silver or golden chains around their necks and replace them with a cross, to remind them of the only wonder-working Gospel of Jesus, St. Paul’s Congregation is grow- ing ever larger and ever stronger, Since the last meeting of the Synodical Conference, parents brought 83 children to us for baptism, and 9 adults, who had learned the great value of baptism and the great treasures in baptism, They came to us to be baptized. Thus a total of 92 have been baptized during the past two years. During that period of time we thor- oughly instructed and confirmed 40 children and 41 adults. St. Paul’s Congregation now numbers 859 souls, of whom 503 are communicant members, Sixty-seven of the communicant mem- bers are not at home. Many of these are in the service of our country; others, on account of work, are in different cities and have not yet called for a transfer to another Lutheran church, Because of the constant increase which the Lord is giving to into our church building. Our present task is to gather $50,000 from our members dur- ing the next two years. We have not as yet made a house-to-house canvass, but already interest has run so high that quite a number want to thank God, and we already do, that He has moved the hearts of many Christians to give us our present house of worship and to help St. Paul’s to support its workers until May, 1944, when a great portion of the teachers’ salaries. St. Paul’s is still receiy- ing a subsidy of $165 monthly for its school from the Missionary Board.
