Synodical Conference of North America. 1950 91 We have also solicited other congregations in Districts as the Presidents and Boards of Directors of such Districts have given us permission — asking for a contribution of $25 from some individual or organization. The response to this has been $5,545.02 as of June 1, 1950. We find that the academic standing of the school is exception- ally high. This may be accounted for in some measure by the fact that the children come from better colored homes. A girl of the Lutheran Co-operative School came in third in the city and country colored schools for the National Spelling Contest — held each year in Washington, D.C. The Lutheran Co-operative School enjoys a splendid reputa- tion in our community — and we cannot emphasize too much the opportunity of preaching to the colored in Memphis. Christ’s command is: “Go ye therefore and teach all nations” — and God’s promise: “My Word . .. shall not return unto Me void.” The preaching and teaching of the Gospel to 240 children will bear fruit, since our heavenly Father promises us that much. More and more we are beginning to realize the confidence placed in us—because of our earnestness in preaching to adults and children alike. We hope that those congregations in the North who do not have opportunities such as we have in Memphis (among the highest colored population) and who wish to do something in a tangible way will respond to the plea of Rev. Koeper to ask some individual or organization to contribute towards the debt liquidation. The financial report shows that the school is self-supporting. Last year seventeen were won for the local colored congrega- tion through the efforts of the school. The chapel in the schoolroom is used by Calvary Lutheran (colored) Congregation, which pays a rental to the school. Services are conducted regularly every Sunday, and also Sunday school and Bible class.
