In the past three years the U.S. economy continued to slump, family wealth has declined, the downturn in the capital markets has resulted in losses on investments including endowment funds, and the stock markets have been slow to rebound. These forces have been com- bined with a dramatic reduction in direct cash support from the Synod resulting in financial pressures for higher education. In spite of these external financial pressures, we are pleased with the progress that is being made. The financial trends indicate a strengthening financial position for our institutions as higher edu- cation continues to overcome today’s fiscal challenges.
