These discussions resulted in considerable progress toward this goal, which was reported in detail to the 1992 convention with the recommendation that further discussions be held to seek resolution of remaining issues. Since 1992 RIM has repeatedly been asking President Barry to resume these discus- sions. Finally in 1996 plans were underway to resume this important task. President Barry and RIM appointed participants whose names appeared in an official announcement in the Reporter. Then some- one pointed out to President Barry that Dr. Ted Jungkuntz, one of the RIM representatives. was no longer on Synod’s clergy roster. Even though Dr. Jungkuntz was a full participant in the previous discussions and was in the participant list in the aforementioned Reporter announcement, President Barry insisted that Dr. Jungkuntz could not be a participant in the resumed discussions since he was no longer a member of Synod. RIM then suggested to President Barry that Dr. Jungkuntz be permitted to attend the resumed discussions but only as an “advi- sor” to the RIM team with RIM even picking up his costs. Presi- dent Barry declined this suggestion. RIM then postponed the planned resumption of these talks until all attempts to have Dr. Jungkuntz’s clergy status restored are exhausted since RIM be- lieves his “Confessions expertise” is invaluable toward accom- plishing the desired results of these talks and that he was removed from the clergy roster illegally. (See overture “To Restore Dr. Ted Jungkuntz’s CRM Status” elsewhere in the 1998 Convention Work- book.) Therefore we submit the following overture to the 1998 con- vention of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod: Wuereas, Both President Barry and RIM desire a resumption of the discussions between the Synod and RIM representatives: and Wuereas, Dr. Ted Jungkuntz provided much theological ex- pertise in the previous discussions and would be an asset for a res- olution of remaining issues: therefore be it Resolved, That the President of the Synod involve Dr. Ted Jungkuntz in future discussions between the Synod and RIM. and be it further Resolved. That these discussions be resumed at a time as de- cided by Synod’s President in consultation with RIM. Gloria Dei Houston, TX 3-97 To Reject Renewal in Missouri Wuereas, Renewal in Missouri, consisting primarily of pastors of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS), seeks to make the charismatic movement acceptable to the LCMS; and WnerEAS, The CTCR has found Renewal in Missouri to be at odds with the doctrinal position of the LCMS: and WHEREAS, Renewal in Missouri has repeatedly been admon- ished by the LCMS; and WHEREAS, The continued affiliation of LCMS pastors with Re- newal in Missouri risks an offense to the confession of the church, which teaches, “... we should and must constantly maintain that God will not deal with us except through His external Word and Sacrament. Whatever is attributed to the Spirit apart from such Word and Sacrament is of the Devil” (SA III, VIII 10); therefore be it Resolved, That pastors who will not sever their ties to Renewal in Missouri by December 31, 1998, and send written notice of such action to their District President and the synodical President, be de- clared unrepentant false teachers; and be it further Resolved, That the District Presidents be required to carry out their obligation to remove unrepentant false teachers from the ros- ter of Synod. Our Redeemer, Forsyth, IL; Bethany, Fort Wayne, IN 3-98 To Affirm Support for RIM WHEREAS, The Scriptures tell us to seek spiritual gifts (1 Cor. 14:1); and WHEREAS, These gifts are part of the inheritance that all Chris- tians can use and enjoy for the common good (1 Cor. 12-14); and WuereEas, The Lutheran Confessions have a strong doctrine of the Holy Spirit; and Wuereas, Luther and the Lutheran Confessions allow for the expression of spiritual gifts; and WHEREAS, The Constitution of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod gives as reason for the forming of a synodical union, that “Our Lord’s will that the diversities of gifts should be for the com- mon profit” (1 Cor. 12:4-31); and WHEREAS, The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod has never officially accepted a dispensational theology; and WHEREAS, Renewal in Missouri has been used by God to revive people in their faith and reintroduce them to spiritual gifts; and WHEREAS, RIM has shown in its response to the CTCR docu- ments on Charismatic Renewal that RIM is in agreement with the LCMS; therefore be it Resolved, That The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod in con- vention affirm its support for RIM and the work it carries on for ongoing spiritual renewal in our church body and thus allow ortho- doxy and spiritual renewal to have a positive leavening effect on each other.
