I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring My salvation to the ends of the earth” (Is. 49:6). As LCMS World Mission seeks to carry out our Lord’s command to go “to the ends of the earth,” the task has been divided into several world areas. Africa/Middle East Sierra Leone Liberia Nigeria Botswana South Africa Africa/Middle East In the past 20 years LCMS work in Africa and the Mid- dle East has expanded from 3 countries and 8 people groups to 15 countries and more than 40 groups. The num- ber of congregations and preaching stations has increased from less than 350 to more than 1,500. LCMS missionaries are training more and more church leaders through theological education by extension. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ghana has begun work in Uganda and Benin in partnership with LCMS World Mis- sion. There are now more Lutherans in Africa than in North America! Statistics from last year indicate that the number of African Lutherans increased from just under 8.6 million to 9.2 million. North America remained stable with about 8.6 million. There are more than 61 million Lutherans worldwide.
