With its doctrinal heritage and Gospel zeal, The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod is poised to turn these challenges into opportunities. Preparing men for the pastoral ministry in our time therefore deserves our best efforts and most rigorous attention. This generation needs men well equipped with sound teaching and pastoral hearts to shepherd Christ’s lambs and sheep and to gather in the lost so they too can hear His life-giving voice. Here, it is critical to “inoculate,” in a physician’s words, our undershepherds toward healthy lifestyles, caring relationships, fiscal stability, lifelong spiritual formation, and excellent theological education. Seminary should invite personal responsibility for wholeness and wellness in pastors and their families in a grace-filled, Word-saturated environment. So too, the seminary assumes corporate responsibility for its physical, relational, fiscal, and spiritual health … a family of mutual care and abundant living in service to Christ. Albert N. Boards of regents have specific responsibilities for governance, including the direct supervision of just one person: the seminary president. All administrative authority belongs to him, vested by and accountable to the BOR, up to the Board for Pastoral Education, and, ultimately, to the church. It is a balanced system of appropriate governance, one that allows a strong BOR to concentrate on both appropriate, immediate oversight and also strategic direction, while exercising stewardship on behalf of the church. The strength of LCMS is its confessional, biblical theology summarized by the three solas. The weakness of LCMS is its inability to spread this simple message of God’s unfathomable and undeserved grace to a world caught up in the importance of self or at least the synergism of Reformed and Roman Catholic teachings. I believe we must find more ways to evangelize as Christ charged us, but at the same time we dare not compromise His Gospel message. Too often in LCMS, one has been asked to choose between the two. I wish to help awaken a unified “Sleeping Giant.” Louis L. Pabor, Magnolia, TX; Trinity, Klein (TX); Investments. S. Conv. Deleg. 1; Fl. Com. 1. D. Conv. Deleg. 1. C.
