The greatest challenge facing our church body is the call to be faithful witnesses of Jesus Christ as we live out our lives in a pluralistic, postmodern society. Concordia, Bronxville’s mission as a college of the LCMS is “to engage and nurture a diverse student body in a Christ-centered, value-oriented liberal arts education for lives of service to church and community.” To be a member of the Board of Regents is to be a trustee of those Lutheran values, an enabler of that mission, and a bearer of fiduciary responsibility for good stewardship of God-given resources. The Gospel calls the church to be in mission. Plans must be designed and implemented based on the Gospel’s call to meet the needs of others. Empty pews in Lutheran churches and declining youth participation in the Lutheran services call on Lutheran educational institutions and Lutheran churches alike to explore unchartered territory for involving youth. Our Concordia universities and Lutheran churches alike must focus on identifying and promoting new evangelistic mission initiatives that empower, energize, and prepare students for missionary service opportunities, including reviving existing Lutheran churches in Africa and providing them with the tools to evangelize their own people. commissioned MINISTERS Ben T. I believe that the Synod must change and stay the same. Given the diversity of cultures, the increasing communications options, and the growth in mission opportunities, our Synod must seek new ways to reach the world with the Gospel of hope. And, the Church must stay the same—by reaching the Body of Christ with the body of Christ, accepting all people the way they are without compromising who we are. I envision our church teaching God’s Word to children of all ages, thus continuing the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther, the greatest advocate for learning and literacy. The schools of our church body provide a wonderful forum to witness the Gospel truth to those who attend and are associated with the schools. At the same time, they provide biblical instruction so that all vocations are prepared to serve as the light of the world for the sake of Jesus and His love. Our universities and seminaries are a staging ground of faith and life formation so that those who are graduated further the call of Christ within our church body and beyond. 51
