The direction the Synod must go is clear in the Great Commission; we are to go, teach, and baptize all nations without fear. Jesus put no limits on our mission; it was broad yet simple. We should not limit ourselves in mission, but should minister to all. Qualifications: The Board for University Education is responsible for establishing educational and administrative standards, policies, and procedures for the coordination of the Synod’s 10 colleges and universities. Board members should have a background and experience in education or administration or finance. They should be acquainted with current trends in education and should have a heart and passion for Christian, Lutheran education that includes preparation for a variety of professions, especially leadership roles that serve parish life in local communities; that offers opportunities for an increasing number of the church’s youth to select a Concordia as a preferred place for higher education experiences; and that promotes the educational system as a mission outreach of the LCMS as a significant feature. Must be available for no fewer than two meetings per year of two days each. Glenn Hurta, McGregor, TX; Trinity, Woodway (TX); LCMS 39; Retired, Exec. VP, Imperial Woodworks, Inc. D. Nom. Com. 9. C. Pres. 2; Bd. of Elders 2. Our seminaries produce leaders who are well prepared to proclaim the Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In today’s world, I believe that our leaders’ education must also equip them to reach out to lost people with compassion, transparency, and authenticity. Our seminaries must have strong financial support and management in order to carry out its task. With my background in finance, management, and my passion for pastoral education, I will do all that I can to strengthen our seminaries and support our future leaders. My 43 years of LCMS ministry, 36 as district staff and district president, have made me keenly aware of the importance of quality training, continuing education, and Christ-centered career preparation for church workers and lay leaders, as provided by Concordia University System. My membership on the board of regents of one of our universities (chair for 7 years) left me deeply committed to this important training arm of our church. If elected, I will work diligently as a board member to strengthen and enhance it so that it will continue to prepare excellent and committed church workers and lay leaders. With God’s help, the Board for Pastoral Education has been a strong advocate for seminary education in the LCMS, a catalyst for cooperation between the seminaries, and a supporter of innovative developments in seminary education. This is as it should be, since I firmly agree with our Synod’s founding fathers that the most important task of the Synod is to prepare faithful pastors for service to the church. With the physical and spiritual support of all members of the LCMS, I look forward to the future as our two seminaries, in brotherly competition, continue to strive for excellence in pastoral education.
