# LCMS Convention Workbook_St. Louis Missouri_2010_S30 # Machine transcription, uncorrected — CHI Digital Archive (demonstration) BIOGRAPHICAL SYNOPSES AND STATEMENTS OF NOMINEES We will not know until after the 2010 convention whether and to what extent the widespread proposals of the Blue Ribbon Task Force on Synod Structure and Governance will be adopted. Even after the convention, some changes will require ratification by LCMS congregations. All will combine to make the inclusion of changes into the Synod’s Handbook and their implementation into the Synod’s life major challenges for the Secretary’s Office. My twelve years’ experience in this office will probably be helpful. I will welcome that challenge if elected to another term of service to our “One People— Forgiven”—our beloved LCMS. NOMINATIONS 2010 SYNODICAL CONVENTION The Committee for Convention Nominations (CCN) met December 3–6, 2009, and January 11–13, 2010. A subsequent conference call meeting on March 11, 2010, was necessary to respond to changes and corrections to the initial nominations list that were brought to the committee’s attention after the list was publicized. Those changes were made without dissenting vote. As the CCN went about its work in preparation for the 2010 convention, it struggled because of an unusually low number of nominations submitted from the Synod at large. Due to a lack of eligible nominees for some positions, the committee was not always able to provide the number of candidates necessary to fulfill the requirements of Bylaw 3.12.3.6 (a). The committee prayerfully presents its best effort as it presents the candidates listed in this publication. Elections will occur during the July 10–17, 2010 convention in Houston, Texas. The committee expresses its appreciation to all who allowed their names to be considered for nomination. SECRETARY Larry S. Com., Thrivent North County Regional 8. My vision for the Synod as Secretary would be twofold. The near and narrow focus is on the Bylaws of the Synod and the faithful performance of the duties of the office. This includes involvement with the structure of the Synod in supporting congregations and rostered workers as well as enabling them to be faithful to their voluntary commitments. The far and wide focus is on the goals of the Synod to remain both doctrinally faithful and vigorous in outreach with the Gospel. This includes involvement with boards and commissions as a supportive member of a dedicated and faithful team. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ 1 ordained minister to be elected Qualifications: The Secretary must be an ordained minister with the skills necessary to perform the customary duties of a corporate secretary; carry out the required responsibilities relating to conventions of the Synod; perform such other work as pertains to his office by bylaw or by assignment by conventions, the President, or the Board of Directors; and provide counsel from the Constitution, Bylaws, and resolutions of the Synod to the members of the Synod on a daily basis. Administrative responsibilities include oversight of the Synod’s dispute resolution process and supervision of the official rosters of the Synod. Membership on numerous boards, commissions, and committees includes service as secretary of the Commission on Constitutional Matters and of the Board of Directors. A high degree of integrity is essential, and a range of prior experience in the Synod will be helpful. ORDAINED MINISTERS VICE-PRESIDENT–FINANCE—TREASURER 1 layperson to be elected (Nominated by the LCMS Board of Directors; other nominations may be made from the floor) Qualifications: The Vice-President–Finance—Treasurer, as the Chief Financial Officer of the Synod, oversees all financial-related areas, including accounts receivable, cash receipts, general and cost accounting, risk management, budgeting, and corporate insurance. The position requires advanced analytical, interpersonal leadership competencies and fiduciary responsibility to successfully support mission and ministry in the Synod and corporate entities. p p p p p p p p p p p p p p p p p p p p p p p p p p p p p p p p p p p p p p p p p p p p p p p Raymond L.
