# LCMS Convention Workbook_St. Louis Missouri_1969_S407 # Machine transcription, uncorrected — CHI Digital Archive (demonstration) CHURCH LITERATURE AND PUBLICATIONS; PUBLIC RELATIONS AND COMMUNICATIONS 407 More than 18 million multicolor Sunday school pic- tures have been distributed to mission workers in 52 countries. The Tract Mission’s activity also penetrates to the far-off corners of the world through the pages of the Worldwide Evangelist. Upwards of 6,000 individuals and groups have been and are engaged in mailing sur- plus Christian literature overseas. The spiritually troubled are referred to the local clergy. How amazing that so much is done with so little! Reaching Out Through 43 Periodicals Another major area of printing that binds the church together around the Word, that keeps the church in- formed, that teaches, inspires, strengthens, and reaches into all corners of the world, is that of periodicals. As the publisher of the Synod, CPH produces and distributes 43 different periodicals for every age level in the church. Imagine the tremendous influence these have in the life of the church! But there are some reasons for concern. The demise of the Saturday Evening Post points up some of the in- creasing editorial, circulation, and cost problems that are affecting all periodicals, both religious and secular. During the biennium CPH secured the services of an experienced man to concentrate full time on the cir- ulation needs and potential readers of the Lutheran Wit- ness and the Lutheran Witness Reporter. The bimonthly Portals of Prayer continues to lead in circulation with over a million copies per issue. The re- corded version of Portals of Prayer, distributed through KFUO, is heard by an estimated audience of more than 40,000,000 weekly. More than 800 radio stations throughout the United States, Canada, Taiwan, Korea, Okinawa, Hong Kong, Puerto Rico, the Netherlands Antilles, the Philippines, and Ethiopia carry the broadcast on a free-time basis. Many penal institutions, hospitals, nursing homes, and parochial schools also listen to the recorded version. Looking Toward the °70s Today Concordia is well advanced into its centennial year. It’s a time for reflection, particularly a time for thanksgiving and praise. Surely God's blessings have been abundant and evident. It is also a time for looking forward and moving forward, a time for implementing the full dimensions of CPH’s centennial “New Horizons in Christian Communication” emphasis. We thank God that He has given Concordia so many avenues and means for communicating the precious Word: books, pamphlets, tracts, curriculum and textbook materials, periodicals, audiovisuals, music, ecclesiastical arts. Together with the Synod, our eyes are on the im- mediate and far horizons, eager to fulfill our joint mis- sion to be all things to all men in a world of change, a world desperately in need of the Word that saves and sanctifies. We rejoice in our role as the publishing arm of the Synod and beseech God’s blessings upon us as a pub- lishing house family. We pray that He would make us ever more effective servants of the “mysteries of God.” May He continue to richly bless the splendid spir- itual synodical resource that is Concordia Publishing House, that Concordia may continue to be a progressive leader and instrument for spreading the Word and for edifying the body of Christ.
