Sunday,” at which time every member of every congregation wou'd be asked to contribute, as part of his Sunday offering, letters to his congressman and senators, asking for immediate action to wipe out hunger in the United States. F. While action can begin now on these matters through existing administrative channels, the problem of world hunger is so monumental that as a final re- quest we ask this convention to authorize a study, modeled along the lines of the Kretzmann study and prepared for the next synodical convention. which would gather and analyze the data of various experts on the problem of world hunger and translate this informa- tion into an appropriate set of responses for our church body. TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH New York, N, Y. FELIx Drevon, Chairman (9-08) To Provide Housing Staff Member Wuereas, The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod, assembled in convention in New York in July 1967, re- solved to undertake a program of education and action that would provide greater opportunity for people to obtain a place of residence, particularly people who were restricted in so doing because of race or national origin; and Wuereas, The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod assigned this responsibility to its Board of Social Min- istry for purposes of administration and implementation: and Wuereas, The opportunities of service to our fellow- men in this special form of ministry represent an ever- growing challenge: and Wuereas, The “Keys for Christ” venture evoked a particularly significant response on the part of Luther- ans throughout the United States to witness to their faith and to show their intentions of aiding their fellow- man in this critical area of need; and Whereas, The responsibilities for continued and care- ful adminstration of funds, the review of proposed proj- ects, the consultation with District Boards of Social Ministry, and the preparation and dissemination of ma- terials designed to acquaint congregations and Districts with housing information impose undue burdens on the Board of Social Ministry and staff as now constituted: therefore be it Resolved, That in faithfulness to the principles of good stewardship and good administrative procedures adequate staff be added to the staff of the Board of Social Ministry, who under the direction of the Execu- tive Secretary of the Board of Social Ministry shall devote himself primarily to the special ministry and the opportunities facing the church in the area of housing. BoarbD OF SociaL MINISTRY LesLie F. Weber, Executive Secretary (9-09) To Strengthen Standards of Morality Wuereas, Moral standards are on the decline in our nation; and Wuereas, The Bible, the church, and the clergy are often treated with contempt in comedy routines on tele- vision: and WueErEaS, The spread of pornographic materials is on the increase; and Wuereas, The U.S. mails are used in the distribution of pornographic literature: and Wuereas, Nudism and sexual perversion are becom- ing more common in films and plays: and Wuereas, The church needs to proclaim God's stan- dards for purity, truth, and morality: therefore be it Resolved, That we ask our congregations to be active in strengthening local standards of morality and con- duct; and be it further Resolved, That we ask the President of the Synod to inform President Nixon, the members of the Senate and House of Representatives, and the Governors of all states of our concern for positive legislation and judicial action to protect and strengthen the moral standards of the nation. Zion LUTHERAN CHURCH Anaheim, Calif. Marvin RAMMELSBERG, President (9-10) To Show Concern for Moral Climate Wuereas, The church has a God-given concern for the moral climate in which its people and society in gen- eral live; and WuereEAs, The exploitation of violence and sex in print, films, theaters, and television debases the good purposes for which God has given life and sexuality in life: therefore be it Resolved, That the church strive to improve the pres- ent moral climate by: 1) encouraging its families to discriminate in their support of good publications, films, stage plays, tele- vision programs, etc.; 2) encouraging its members in their witness to the communications industry and society at large in this respect: and 3) encouraging talented Christians to prepare them- selves as communicators and to promote high moral standards in the industry.
