PASTORAL CONFERENCE OF Circuits 4, 5, AND 6 SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA DISTRICT Amos ScHmiptT, Chairman HERBERT HOHENSTEIN, Secretary (6-35) To Build a Seminary at Irvine and to Study Advisability of Relocating Springfield Seminary Wuereas, The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod, assembled in convention at Cleveland, Ohio, in 1962, resolved to build a new Lutheran college at Irvine, Calif.; and Wuereas, This resolution was reaffirmed by the syn- odical convention assembled in Detroit, Mich., in 1965; and Whereas, The Southern California District of The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod is by far the most populated area in the western region of the United States, with some 1212 million people living in the 14 counties of southern California, with five of these coun- ties — Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Ventura Counties — passing the 10-million mark in population; and Whereas, Forty percent of the people in the 11 west- ern states reside in southern California, and thus it would appear to be a most effective location for an edu- cational institution; and WuereEas, There are more Lutheran Church — Mis- souri Synod congregations in the Southern California District than in any other comparable area on the west coast; and Wuereas, The educational site at Irvine, Calif., is considered by some authorities to be one of the best The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod has in the United States, in an area considered by some to be one of the best planned communities in our nation, situated near the University of California at Irvine; and Wuereas, The Board for Higher Education of The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod holds title to this property at Irvine and full architectural plans have already been developed by John Warnecke and Asso- ciates for the development of this educational site; and Wuereas, The property at Concordia College, Oak- land, Calif., is far too small for growth and future ex- pansion; and Wuereas, A 4-year college is also needed on the west coast because of continuing population shifts, and property is available at Lake Chabot for such an insti- tution on the west coast; and Wuereas, A Missouri Synod Lutheran seminary on the west coast is a must in future synodical planning, since population trends are continuing west: therefore be it Resolved, That The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod, assembled in convention at Denver, Colo., autho- rize the Board for Higher Education to begin construc- tion of a new seminary at Irvine, Calif, as soon as money is available; and be it further Resolved. That this convention instruct the Board for Higher Education to thoroughly study the advisabil- ity of moving the present Springfield seminary to the Irvine property.
