First LuTHERAN CHURCH Burbank, Calif. Don Kaun, President Puiuip Scorr III, Secretary (6-32) To Carry Out District Resolution re Irvine Wuereas, Plans on the Irvine college have been post- poned until the Denver convention (1969); and Wuereas, The Southern California 26th delegate con- vention assembled in Phoenix, Ariz., April 16—19, 1968, memorialized the Denver convention in its Resolution No. 5 endorsing construction of the Irvine college; there- fore be it Resolved, That Peace Lutheran Church present [en- dorse] this resolution to the Denver convention with vigor, Peace LUTHERAN CHURCH Pico Rivera, Calif. James E, WricuHT, President CuaRLES R. BIRNER, Pastor RESOLUTION No.5 (Twenty-sixth Convention of the Southern California District) Subject: IRVINE COLLEGE Wuereas, Resolution 6-12 (Proceedings, 1967, p. 127) presented to the synodical convention in New York by the floor committee was never duly considered because of action by delegates from the California and Nevada District in placing a substitute motion before the con- vention; and Whereas, The substitute motion called for deferment of the Irvine college matter until 1969 and for the Board for Higher Education to reevaluate the program of higher education on the West Coast; and Wuereas, The Board for Higher Education and the Board of Directors of the Synod have intensively studied the entire situation of higher education for the West Coast since 1953; and Wuereas, Current statistics from California indicate that the greatest growth potential, as well as the greatest concentration of Lutheranism, is in the southern Cali- fornia area; and Wuereas, The Irvine site, bordering upon a great state university and closely situated to several universi- ties and a great metropolitan area, is highly desirable for any education effort on the part of our church; and Wuereas, The Irvine site has been purchased and prepared, and the college has already been planned to the extent of working drawings; and Wuereas, The educational needs of a growing church body continue to increase and the synodical Board for Higher Education deems California Concordia College at Oakland to be inadequate to meet these needs (cf. Resolution 6-12, Proceedings, p.127, New York, 1967); and Wuereas, The consideration of California Lutheran College at Thousand Oaks (ALC) for the training of our LCMS professional workers is premature, is a de- parture from synodical policy, and requires in-depth study; and WuHerEAS, Such a far-reaching decision should not be determined by the current financial problem, and we trust that the Lord of the church, through His people. will provide the means for the establishment of the Ir- vine college; therefore be it Resolved, That this, the 26th delegate convention of the Southern California District of The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod, assembled in Phoenix, Ariz., April 16—19, 1968, memorialize the convention of The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod at Denver, Colo. (1969), to proceed with the establishment of the Irvine college; and be it further Resolved, That the District’s Board of Directors be directed to carry out the wishes of the convention in this matter; and be it finally Resolved, That to this end we of the Southern Cali- fornia District declare our wholehearted support. (6-33) To Begin Irvine Construction As Soon as Funds Are Available Wuereas, The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod voted at the Cleveland convention in 1962 to build a Lutheran college in southern California and reaffirmed this decision at the 1965 Detroit convention; and WuereEas, The Synod has already purchased property at Irvine, Calif., for the proposed college and has ap- proved architect’s plans for the proposed college; and Wuereas, The need for a college on an adequate cam- pus in southern California still exists because of the continuing population explosion in that area; therefore be it Resolved, That the Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod begin construction of the proposed college as soon as furids are available.
