Grace LUTHERAN CHURCH Bishop, Calif. Harry W. Marks, Pastor GLENN ScHOLTA, President JosEPH Doyon, Secretary (6-30) To Consider Partnership Arrangement with California Lutheran College Wuereas, The Lutheran Church— Missouri Synod in convention assembled, its Board for Higher Educa- tion, and our own Southern California District have recognized the necessity to establish a college in south- ern California and to this end have secured property at Irvine for a junior college; and WHEREAS, The ever-increasing necessity for a college in southern California is fast approaching the critical stage; and Wuereas, We Christians recognize and are alarmed at the ever-present imbalance between expenditures for higher education on the one hand and the church's mission to the whole man on the other hand; and Whereas, An outlay of at least nine million dollars for the establishment and equipping of a junior college in the face of mounting costs (a drain of manpower as well) is not in keeping with sound stewardship; and Wuereas, Not a junior college but a fully accredited 4-year Lutheran college already exists with a student body of 1,076 in Thousand Oaks, Calif.; and Wuereas, Thousand Oaks is located in a smog-free planned community within the Los Angeles metropoli- tan area in one of the choicest locations in southern California; and WuereEas, California Lutheran College, Thousand Oaks, is within the radius of two large schools: the University of California and San Fernando State for possible graduate work and research; and WuereEas, California Lutheran College, Thousand Oaks, carries a full program in the liberal arts, offering the B. A. degree in 23 major fields, a fifth year in pro- fessional education, and pre-professional training in several areas; and Wuereas, California Lutheran College is already serving a good number of our own Synod’s youth and in turn is being served by “Missourians” in its faculty and its board of regents; therefore be it Resolved, That the 48th convention of The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod, assembled in Denver, re- quest the Board for Higher Education to consider part- nership with California Lutheran College.
