First LUTHERAN CHURCH Temple City, Calif. Rocer GosswEIn, Chairman R. E. Scuvrz, Pastor (6-26) To Begin Irvine Construction As Soon as Possible Whereas, A resolution to build a new Lutheran col- lege in southern California was passed by the synodical convention in Cleveland in 1962, reaffirmed at Detroit in 1965, and further discussed in New York in 1967; and Wuereas, The Synod has purchased an ideal piece of property near the Irvine campus of the U. of Cali- fornia for this school; and Wuereas, Forty percent of the total populace of the West resides in southern California, and 45 to 50 per- cent of the communicant strength of our Synod in the Far West is in churches most conveniently served by a southern California school; therefore be it Resolved, That the Synod reaffirm plans for the establishment of a college in the Irvine area and en- courage the Board for Higher Education to begin con- struction as soon as it is economically possible. Hope LUTHERAN CHURCH Whittier, Calif. Daniet N, Roursad, Secretary Roy G. Gescu, Pastor (6-27) To Begin Construction at Irvine Whereas, A resolution to build a new Lutheran col- lege in southern California was passed by the synodical convention at Cleveland, Ohio, in 1962, was reaffirmed by the synodical convention at Detroit, Mich., in 1965, and has been, in our estimation, favorably considered by the Board for Higher Education for the past year and one-half: and Whereas, Southern California is by far the most populated area in the western region of the United States and also has more congregations than in any other comparable area on the West Coast: and Wuereas, The Board for Higher Education presently holds title to the proposed site at Irvine, Calif., and full architectural plans have been developed for this educa- tional site, which is considered to be one of the most desirable locations our church owns for an educational facility; and Wuereas, Following the guideline of Handbook Sec- tion 1.27 g, it is pointed out that the Synod has autho- rized the borrowing of moneys for educational expan- sion, the selling of one of our present educational facilities where further expansion is impossible would provide additional moneys, and funds through the “President’s Fellowship’? could be made available for this purpose; therefore be it Resolved, That the Board for Higher Education be authorized, as sufficient moneys become available. to begin construction of the new college (and or seminary) at the Irvine location in southern California.
