Brandt Fort Dodge, Iowa (3-261) An identical overture was submitted by St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Falls City, Nebr., Leonard Fritz, Chairman: Wm. Huebner Jr., Secretary (3-262) To Join LWF and WCC Wuereas, Our Lord wills the unity of His people (John 17); and WuerEAS, The Constitution of our Synod affirms the promotion of the unity of the one church and a defense against sectarianism as one of the objects of Synod (Art. III, 1); and Wuereas, The Lutheran World Federation and the World Council of Churches are Christian organizations as witnessed by their respective confessional standards which are obligatory on their member churches; and Wuereas, These two organizations are engaged in the promotion of the unity of God’s people throughout the world; and Wuereas, The Constitution of the Lutheran World Federation and the World Council of Churches safe- guard the confessional integrity of member churches; and Wuereas, Our Synod’s witness is a worthy contribu- tion to be shared with fellow Christians, and their wit- ness in return is needed by our Synod; and Wuereas, The mutual witness of Christian love and fellowship is needed by the world which Christ came to redeem, so that in this eschatological age ‘“‘the world may believe in Christ,” (John 17:21); therefore be it Resolved, That The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod at its 1969 synodical convention make all neces- sary preparations to join the Lutheran World Federa- tion and the World Council of Churches as a member church of the two organizations with all possible haste and urgency; and be it further Resolved, That the 1969 convention of the Synod approve the date of the next regular convention of the Synod as an appropriate time for the Synod to decide whether to join these two Christian organizations as a member church. Rev, STaNnLeY D. Papcetr Russell, Kans. (3-263) Not to Enter into Membership with LWF, NCC, and WCC Wuereas, It is strongly hinted that memorials favor- ing membership in LWF, NCC, and WCC will be sub- mitted to The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod at the Denver convention in 1969; and Wuereas, Up to the present time there does not exist a clear declaration in doctrinal matters on the part of these bodies which we as church could accept; and WuereEaS, The goals and means to attain them are not clear in any of these bodies; and Wuereas, We hold that common church work and worship with churches not in doctrinal agreement with us is unionism since it sanctions the doctrine of the other body; therefore be it Resolved, That The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod be requested not to enter into membership with the Lutheran World Federation, the National Council of Churches, or the World Council of Churches.
