STAHNKE, Pastor (3-35) To Declare Altar and Pulpit Fellowship with The American Lutheran Church Wuereas, It is the will of God that there be unity among Christians when they are of one mind and spirit: and Wuereas, Christian unity does not rest on a listing of a certain number of doctrines that people manage to agree on, but rather “it is sufficient for the true unity of the Christian church that the Gospel be preached in conformity with a pure understanding of it and that the sacraments be administered in accordance with the divine Word” (AC, Art. VII): and this basic principle for church unity certainly applies also for altar and pulpit fellowship; and Wuenreas, Essays adopted by The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod and The American Lutheran Church commissioners and set forth after earnest and sincere study of each other’s confessional stance and platforms, as set forth in their constitutions, as well as their dis- cussions of related questions. reflect and demonstrate their agreement in their understanding of the Gospel and the sacraments; and WuereEAs, The directives of Resolution 3-23 (cf. New York Convention Proceedings, pp.102—103) to examine the conditions for altar and pulpit fellowship have been carried out and no division but only harmony of thought and interpretation have been found: and Wuereas, The hand of fellowship with our Christian brothers will be a true witness in confessing our Lord and Savior jointly to the world with one heart, mind. and voice and will show forth a new togetherness in Christ through unity and mutual understanding and assistance; and WHEREAS, Our joint worship and joint efforts of Christ-centered witnessing and projects will be a true blessing to both LCMS and ALC, and mutual benefits will accrue in reducing competition, expense, and fric- tion; and Wuereas, We need to love more, as Christ first loved us, and an official declaration of the fellowship that LCMS already has in Christ with ALC would be a true expression of the love of Christ in us: be it therefore Resolved, That The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod recognize that the conditions for altar and pulpit fellowship with The American Lutheran Church have been met: and be it further Resolved, That LCMS declare itself dedicated to the will of God for church unity: and be it further Resolved, That LCMS in convention assembled in Denver. Colo., July 11—19, 1969, declare altar and pul- pit fellowship with ALC: and be it finally Resolved, That this declaration of fellowship be. in a spirit of love and understanding, and through the proper channels of the Synod, immediately implemented.
