(3-11) To Terminate Immediately LCUSA Membership Wuereas, A major reason given at the Detroit con- vention in 1965 for joining the Lutheran Council in the U.S. A. was the opportunity afforded to engage in doc- trinal discussion with the other synods: and Wuereas, The only theological position paper to de- velop from these discussions thus far is the study and discussion guide in Christology entitled Who Can This Be? and Wuereas, This booklet contains a number of theo- logically untenable statements, such as “Jesus at that moment [in Gethsemane} had no divine preview of the necessity of the cross. He shrank from death as we shrink from death in all its lonely terror. Likely he was even unaware of the resurrection that lay beyond the criminal’s death” (p. 25); and WHEREAS, The only “mutual witness” provided by such statements from LCUSA is one of Biblical igno- rance; therefore be it Resolved, That the Synod terminate immediately its membership in the Lutheran Council in the U.S.A. Our SAvior LUTHERAN CHURCH Pinole, Calif. Harotp Davipson, Secretary (3-12) To Sever Relations with LCUSA Wuereas, Historically The Lutheran Church — Mis- souri Synod has correctly, on the basis of Holy Scrip- ture, repudiated religious unionism, demanding doc- trinal agreement prior to union; and Wuereas, The Lutheran Council in the U.S.A. is involving our beloved Missouri Synod in highly debat- able social, political, and nonreligious issues that do not represent the thinking or wishes of all our congre- gations and people; and Wuereas, LCUSA is carrying out a semiclandestine series of doctrinal discussions that are not open to the entire constituency of our beloved Synod and are being used to train a core of specially invited clergymen in a theology and an approach to the Scriptures that are not at all in harmony with the Word of God and with the officially confessed and accepted position of The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod; and Wuereas, Membership of our Synod in LCUSA com- pels our members to support activities that conflict with their conscience as they give financial support and mis- sion offerings; and Whereas, Officials of LCUSA still defend Who Can This Be? and Wuereas, The leadership of LCUSA has evidenced their determination to enlarge its unionistic field by electing to send “observer consultants” to the Consulta- tion on Church Union (COCU), which is beyond the scope of LCUSA’s function, The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod not having authorized such representa- tion; therefore be it Resolved, That Zion Ev. Lutheran Church of New Salem, N. Dak., petition The Lutheran Church — Mis- souri Synod to sever its relations with the Lutheran Council in the U.S.A., bringing about such complete separation no later than by the end of 1969.
