# LCMS Convention Proceedings_St. Louis Missouri_1962_S204 # Machine transcription, uncorrected — CHI Digital Archive (demonstration) COMMITTEE 13 203 [1129] The Lutheran Laymen’s League and Evolution Wueress, The Lutheran Laymen’s League has se- lected as one of its speakers at its annual convention to be held in Portland, Oreg., an editor who believes that it is “permissible for a pastor or professor within the Missouri Synod to maintain that man has evolved from some primary organism” (see pp. 60 and 61 of “What Is Troubling the Lutherans,” Part IV, News & Views, May 1962); and Wuereas, Several pastors in The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod have visited this editor but have failed to persuade him to retract an editorial and review favorable to evolution (January 1960 and March 1960 of the Cresset); and Wuereas, The Lutheran Laymen’s League has been informed that this editor tolerates the evolutionary origin of man (even though he himself may not ac- cept it) but has failed to withdraw its invitation to this editor; therefore be it Resolved, That The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod request the Lutheran Laymen’s League not to invite any speaker from the Missouri Synod who tol- erates the evolutionary view of the origin of man. ANDREW Gawura, Dearborn, Mich. [1130] A Christian’s Attitude Toward War Wuereas, The Synod’s statement on “A Christian’s Attitude Toward War,” as published in the Concordia Theological Monthly (Feb, 1955) and the Lutheran Wit- ness (Feb. 1, 1955) pursuant to the Synod’s resolution at Houston in June 1953, is not conclusive and defini- tive by its own admission, e.g., “.. . can obviously not cover every phase . . .” and suggests that “our church should concern itself with the wider aspects of the problems involved”; therefore May I respectfully suggest that the Synod appoint a committee to work with the Literature Board and the seminary faculties to study this vital question and to endeavor to bring to fruition a definitive Scriptural statement on “A Christian’s Attitude Toward War” and that this statement be published in our church peri- odicals.
