Dorn, Manager Concordia Publishing House 3558 South Jefferson Avenue St. Louis 18, Missouri Dear Dr. Dorn: The Special Committee on Synodical Serial Indexing, as suggested by you, met on the Seminary Campus on September 12, 1961. Present were Dr. Carl S. Meyer, Dr. Edgar Krentz, Dr. E. L. Lueker and the undersigned. The attached resulted from this meeting. Actually, I know that you are aware of the fact that the “Brief” does not represent the thinking of only the four men involved, but of innumerable individuals throughout Synod, of the Junior College librarians, indi- vidual clergymen, Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, and the Concordia Historical Institute. Activities and suggestions not only of the Committee of four, but also many individuals in addition are based upon the resolution passed at the synodical Convention in San Francisco. It is found in the 1959 Proceedings, pp. 274, 275. Permit me to assure you, Dr. Dorn, of the profound concern the Committee has for the development and implementation of this project. Should you desire, all four members of the Committee as a group, or individ- ually, will be delighted to meet with you further on these matters, or with your Board of Directors. ‘With kindest personal greetings, and sincerest best wishes — also for your safe return from Europe —I am As ever yours, /s/ AuG. R. SUELFLOw ARS: ms Pro tem Secretary of the Committee Proposals and Brief for a Synodical Index as Outlined by the Index Committee I. THe NEEDS 1. To provide the tools for pastors and teachers in order that a continued use may be made of synodical journals. 2. To coordinate specific materials for individual boards, committees, commissions, and agencies of the Synod. 3. To supply a horizontal integration through such an index. This is true of the producers as well as the comsumers. This need is as great for the contemporary as for the past. 4. To coordinate the information contained in the mul- tiplicity of journals and serials. 5. To acquaint the beginning pastor with historical background, problems of church, past thought and past theology, etc. 6. To serve as a medium by which those outside of our church will become better acquainted with the theo- logical thought and history of our Synod. II. THE Score The committee recommends that the index include (1) a basie corps of journals completely and (2) a sub- sidiary list selectively. Three categories are presented in the order of importance of content: 1. Essential Concordia Theological Monthly Lutheran Education Lutheran Witness Concordia Historical Institute Quarterly Advance
