Boarp oF TRUSTEES LuTHERAN HicH ScHOOL Racine, Wis. Cuare E. HeLrenserc, President [361] To Have the Synod Give Reassurance Regarding Rejection of a Doctrine, ete. We confess that all Scripture is inspired by God. We therefore reject as false doctrine destructive of the very foundation of Christian faith the following teach- ing of members of Valparaiso University which has been propagandized in the March issue (1962) of the Cresset: Scripture clearly states that “the soul that sinneth, it shall die.” It states just as clearly: “He that liveth and believeth in me shall never die.” To apply the same rubric — “teachings found in inspired Scripture” — to both of these statements is to become guilty of what Walther calls con-fusion, a fusing together of diverse elements which ought to be kept distinct. We request of the Synod that it give us the reassur- ance that it is agreed with us in rejecting the above doctrine as destructive of the Christian faith. Sr. Joun’s LUTHERAN CONGREGATION Clinton, Iowa Joun M. Ruameg, Secretary of Committee on Doctrinal and Synodical Matters [362] To Send Observers to the Fifth Plenary Congress of the International Council of Christian Churches Wuereas, The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod sent observers to the World Council of Churches which met in New Delhi, India, in 1961; and Wuereas, The International Council of Christian Churches will meet for its Fifth Plenary Congress in Amsterdam, Holland, from Aug. 14 to 20, 1962; and Wuereas, The World Council of Churches is mod- ernistic in its leadership, with a wide variety of views and conflicting opinions concerning Christ, His life, His death, and His resurrection while the International Council of Christian Churches emphasizes the truth concerning the deity of Christ and His death as a sub- stitute for the sins of men; and Wuereas, The World Council is inclusivist, with believers and unbelievers, orthodox and liberals, in unholy fellowship together in its fold, while the Inter- national Council of Christian Churches welcomes all in its fellowship who seek to maintain “the purity of the church in doctrine and life”; and Wuereas, The creedal basis of the World Council of Churches allows for a wide range of conflicting inter- pretations while the International Council has adopted a statement of faith which affirms the inerrancy of the Scriptures, the Trinity, the blood of Christ, the deity of Christ, the virgin birth of Christ, and the resurrec- tion; and Wuereas, The World Council numbers in its mem- bership the Greek Catholic Church with its Mass, mari- ology, images, and idolatry while the International Council numbers in its membership only Protestant churches remaining true to the heritage of the Ref- ormation; and Wuereas, The World Council has exalted to positions of leadership some of the most outstanding modernists in the world today, including Bishop G. Bromley Ox- nam, who has called the God of the Old Testament a “dirty bully” because He condemns man for Adam’s sin, while the International Council numbers among its membership only men who believe the entire Bible and are known around the world as Bible-believing leaders; therefore be it Resolved, That The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod send two (2) observers to the Fifth Plenary Congress of the International Council of Christian Churches; and be it further Resolved, That the 1962 Cleveland convention elect these observers; and be it finally Resolved, That the Lutheran Witness publish a full report on the Fifth Plenary Congress of the Interna- tional Council of Christian Churches. THEODORE SMITHEY, Taylor, Mich. [363] To Instruct Concordia Publishing House to Remove a Bible Class Editor Wuereas, A Bible class editor employed by Concor- dia Publishing House has written in a published letter: I thank you with deep sincerity for the letter you wrote concerning the theological foundations for our Bible study. It is most encouraging to receive such questions from a man on your side of the fence. I am sending you a copy of the pamphlet you mentioned, Theological Foun- dations of Bible Study in Lutheran Churches. This is merely a superficial review of some of our customary attitudes prepared as part of the Bible class teacher training program of Dr. O. E. Feucht. It does not even begin to address itself to the concerns which you voice. Dr. Scharlemann has taught me a great deal. Every-
