Pauu M. LEHENBAUER, Deshler, Ohio [179] To Request Board for Higher Education to Initiate a Study of Interrelationships of the Various Training Programs, etc. Wuereas, The increasing need for professional work- ers in the church has led not only to the training of pastors and teachers but also to the establishment of programs for the training of deaconesses and other church workers by auxiliary organizations of the church, as well as by the Synod itself; and Wuereas, There is need for the clear definition of the purposes and functions of each of the training pro- grams in the Synod for deaconesses and other church workers other than pastors and teachers, as well as the interrelationships of these auxiliary training programs and fields of service; therefore be it Resolved, That the convention of The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod convening in Cleveland 20 to 30 June, 1962, request the Board for Higher Edu- cation to initiate a study of the interrelationships of the various training programs and fields of service in the Synod for deaconesses and other church workers other than pastors and teachers, with the view toward clearly defining their purposes and functions as well as their interrelationships and recommending ways and means to avoid as much as possible the duplication of purposes and efforts. THE Boarp oF DIRECTORS LUTHERAN DEACONESS ASSOCIATION Rosert V. ScHNABEL, Secretary [180] To Appoint Study Commission for Lutheran Lay Higher Education Wuereas, It has become increasingly apparent that the existing facilities for Lutheran lay higher educa- tion within the Synod cannot meet adequately the need for higher education for the laity of our church; and Wuereas, According to a survey of seventeen (17) eastern states, recently conducted under the joint auspices of Valparaiso University and Concordia, Bronxville, interest in, and desire for, increased facilities are apparent for the youth of our church seeking higher education under Lutheran auspices; and Wuereas, Comparatively few college students in the Synod preparing for professions other than church serv- ice are enrolled in our own Lutheran colleges and uni- versities; and Wuereas, Local groups are becoming interested in establishing Lutheran colleges and such ventures may suffer from inadequate planning if not coordinated throughout the church; therefore be it Resolved, That the Synod authorize the President of the Synod, the Executive Director of the Synod, and the Executive Secretary of the Board for Higher Edu- cation to appoint a STUDY COMMISSION FOR LU- THERAN LAY HIGHER EDUCATION: 1) to study the long-range needs throughout the Synod in the United States and Canada for such educa- tion and the most suitable ways and means to provide it; 2) to consult the District officials, pastors, and lay people in various sections of the country regarding this problem, and especially the Lutheran University Asso~ ciation; 3) to report its findings to the next synodical con- vention.
