COMMITTEE 1 [124-A] To Establish a Seminary in the West Coast Area Wuereas, The population of the Western States is growing with phenomenal rapidity, and correspondingly also the membership of our Synod in the West; and Wuerras, The distance from many areas in this region to our present seminaries is considerably more than 2,000 miles, requiring about two days of travel time each way by fast train and costing our parents considerable additional expense for which there is no equalization of costs; and Wuereas, Many parents hesitate to encourage their sons to prepare for full-time Kingdom work, knowing that because of distance and expense the youths will not be at home with them even for Christmas and perhaps not even for the summer vacation; and Wuereas, The present facilities at our seminaries will be filled to capacity in the near future; and WHEREAS, It is much easier to interest young people in regional schools than in schools that are far away; and Wuereas, The Synod now owns the needed building site in the San Francisco, Calif., area for a third semi- nary; therefore be it Resolved, That the Synod proceed immediately to establish its third seminary in the above-mentioned or in another practical Western States area. St. Perer’s LUTHERAN CONGREGATION Medford, Oreg. Joun E. Srmon, Pastor Miuan H. Bever, Secretary [125-A] To Establish a College in Southern California Wuereas, The church has the holy responsibility to provide professional personnel for its ministry; and WHEREAS, The Southern California area has ex- perienced a tremendous population increase and the population is predicted to continue to increase rapidly; and Wuereas, The distances to synodical schools pres- ently prevent proper utilization of our manpower in the Southern California area for professional church work; and Wuereas, Property values are rising in our rapidly expanding area, thus making it urgent to purchase land immediately; therefore be it Resolved, That the forty-fifth regular convention of The Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod authorize the immediate establishment of a college in the Southern California District to meet the needs of the church. ZION LUTHERAN CONGREGATION Anaheim, Calif. Bert JANzow, President C. W. Gustav Enric, Secretary [125-B] To Establish a College in the Southern California District Wuereas, The needs of our church in providing ad- ditional pastors and teachers to serve in our expanding number of congregations and schools already exceed our ability to train sufficient workers; and Wuereas, Future expansion will only multiply this problem; and Wuereas, Parents in our populous area, because of expense and distance, hesitate to send sons and daugh- ters hundreds of miles to our present schools; and Wuereas, A greater number of synodically trained young men and women should be coming from Southern California to serve the church, and the lack of a college in this area has prevented this; and Wuereas, Southern California can expect to double or triple its own pastoral and school placement needs within another fifteen years; and Wuereas, No synodical institution exists within 450 miles of this second-largest population center in the U.S. A.; and Wuereas, The Southern California area has doubled its population in the past fifteen years, and conserva- tive estimates predict a doubling of the present figure of 8,500,000 (ten counties), to some 16 million by 1985; and Wuereas, Land values are increasing constantly, and available property in large parcels will become in- creasingly scarce and prohibitively expensive as time goes on; therefore be it Resolved, That we, the pastor and members of Saint Paul’s Lutheran Congregation of Long Beach, Calif., URGENTLY request the Synod to resolve to establish a college in the Southern California area at the earliest possible time; and be it further Resolved, That we pledge our prayers and support to this cause.
