After considerable discussion a motion to close debate failed to carry. After much additional discussion an amendment was moved and seconded to combine paragraphs B and C and to strike the following words: “are held to teach and act in harmony with such statements, and C. That those.” After still more discussion Dr. Behnken asked for the privilege to make a statement. He stated in brief that he was sur- prised that there should be such hesitancy in adopting a resolution of this type. For if the Synod adopts a doctrinal statement after much study and discussion, is it not binding upon him as the President who is charged with the supervision of the doctrine and upon the members of the Synod? If persons find themselves not in agreement, then the brotherly way is to try to correct the docu- ment as paragraph C outlines. He found it difficult to understand how anyone could fear this resolution as a club or sword. It was announced that the Brief Statement would be mimeographed over- night for distribution among the delegates.
