Board of Regents Concordia Theological Seminary Fort Wayne, Ind. 6-44 To Establish Special Chairs in Missions (This is identical to the previous overture except for the following resolves.) Resolved, That each seminary be encouraged to establish relevant chairs of instruction in missions and evangelism; and be it further Resolved, That The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod through its Stewardship Department establish the necessary fundraising programs to facilitate the establishment of these chairs. Board of Regents Concordia Theological Seminary Fort Wayne, Ind. 6-45 To Provide the Seminaries in the U.S.A. with Professors for Continuing Education WHEREAS, The pastors of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod are able to participate only to a limited degree in Lutheran programs of continuing education; and WHEREAS, The growth in many areas of ministry is urgently needed today among our pastors (e.g. counseling, preaching, evangelism, teaching, etc.); and WHEREAS, The seminaries are the best vehicle of our church for providing the programs of continuing education necessary for the growth and development of the pastors of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod: and WHEREAS, The programs of continuing education (in such areas as education, evangelism, pastoral theology, homiletics, etc.) presently open to our pastors are often un-Lutheran or academically or theologically unsound, therefore be it Resolved, That the Synod urge the Board of Directors and the Board for Professional Education Services to approve and fund one new professor a year during the next triennium at each of the two seminaries in the United States to work in the area of continuing education at the seminary locations and especially throughout the Synod. Board of Regents Concordia Theological Seminary Fort Wayne, Ind. 6-46A To Assume Major Portion of Seminary Funding WHEREAS, The fathers of our Synod recognized that the right preaching and teaching of God’s Word was so important that they established a seminary for this purpose; and WHEREAS, The total expense of the first seminary was assumed by all members of the Synod; and WHEREAS, This was essential so that no man who was willing and qualified to serve His Lord as a pastor should be turned away because of his financial status; and WHEREAS, Even though this need still exists, the Synod over the years has reduced its portion of the seminaries’ total cost; and WHEREAS, This reduction has an adverse effect on the seminaries, the students, and the membership as a whole; therefore be it Resolved, That the policy of our Synod be changed so that over a period of time it once again assumes the major portion of the funding for its seminaries.
