It has been a barometer of possibilities. easily read and clearly understood. Although today many of our schools seem to be losing some of their missionary fervor, the indications of possibilities are still clearly seen. The statistics of the 1981—82 school year revealed almost 11,000 Black children enrolled in the parochial school system. That number :_is growing like a mushroom from year to year. The table on page 28, though incomplete, will reveal the magnitude of the phenomenal increase of Black enrollments in the parochial schools of the Synod. It seems safe to say that approximately 50" of these Black children are non-Lutheran. Their families are non-Lutheran. They have come to the Lutheran school for quality education, often denied them in the public school system in their community. Here they will receive more than quality education. Here they will also learn about Jesus and His love. When we compare God's blessings with our meager efforts, we are shocked at what God can do with so little. We need the faith which such revelation can produce. When we view the magnitude of the challenge for Black ministry in this country, and consider our resources to respond, we are reminded of the response of the disciples at the feeding of the5,000, *Thereisa lad here with five barley loaves and two small fishes; but what are they among so many?’ The table at the bottom of this page will reveal only a small part of that challenge for Black ministry in the nation. Although the supply of Black pastors available for active duty is about twice what it was only five years ago, the supply has not equaled the demand. While we praise God that the 30 vacant pulpits of five years ago have decreased to only 17 today, we still have not made good our commitment to open up all ministries of our church to Blacks. We still have not, in the BLACKS IN THE TOP 50 METROPOLITAN AREAS* SMSA Total Pcp. Bl ack $ Black 1, New York 9,119,737 1,940,415 21.3 2. Les Angeles-Long Beacn 7,477,657 944,009 12.6 3.
