# LCMS Convention Workbook_St. Louis Missouri_1981_S338 # Machine transcription, uncorrected — CHI Digital Archive (demonstration) offices, am very supportive of Synod, and know many qualified leaders of our church throughout the Synod. 2. I am totally committed to the Holy Scrip- tures and the Lutheran Confessions and am very happy that by God’s grace our Synod is maintaining a firm stand on God’s Word while continuing a strong emphasis on evangelism and missions. 3. Iam happy that a new enthusiasm is being generated for the work of missions through our Mission Board goals and our Forward in Remembrance program and also in the area of evangelism. Donald R. Schiemann 1. 2. 3. William Stache 1. I feel that having served on a District Stewardship Board and also on a District Convention Nominations Committee, Iam familiar with some of the workings of our Synod and the need to have good, qualified people serve Jesus Christ and His kingdom in our Synod. 2. Ihave great joy in seeing our Synod putting such great emphasis on the Word of God and the privilege of getting the message of salvation in Jesus to the world. The mission challenges of the 80s are exactly what our church should be involved in and the more wecan do, the better it is for God’s kingdom. . The Great Commission is the one great command for the church. It determines our whole life and work in our Synod, therefore. Working toward sending more mission- aries, Bible translators, and mission “workers” te foreign fields and to special cultures here in America is critical. I’d like to see some kind of development of a tele- vision program (similar to the Lutheran Hour, only on TV) which would present the Gospel of Jesus Christ clearly across the nation. James S. Uhrinak 1. Experience in selection of and working with church workers of all kinds within the District and within congregations served. Understanding of gifts needed in various positions. . Only joy. We are moving ahead theologi- cally, and with a unified Scriptural plan for evangelical outreach with the Gospel at home and abroad. . We need to maintain a strong program of Christian education at all levels in the church, seeking spiritual growth. Such education includes Bible study as well as the study of mission work and outreach opportunities and principles ofevangelism, stewardship, and church growth. Such growth will insure a mission spirit and resources for the mission. Elwood H. Zimmermann 1, Understanding of broad needs of the Synod’s boards; of structure and function of church at large; of quality needed in Synod’s leaders. . Greatest joy in positive, forward mission thrust and the gathering spirit of joy and unity. . Forward, responsibly, together to proclaim the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ in all the world Waldo H. Cloeter 1. I suppose that my previous service, espe- cially at the District level, has given me some understanding of synodical work, and my acquaintance with a goodly number of people from this region could be of some value to a committee for convention nominations. . Even though the church is not perfect, yet I NOMINATIONS find joy and an opportunity for thanks- giving as this imperfect church continues to be a vehicle through which Christ’s mission is carried out. Our Christian day schools, and my involvement in this minis- try, have provided me my greatest joy. 3. We need to focus more on the family, and somehow change the degenerating forces currently at work through movies, tele- vision, and other media, and bring back the “T and my house will serve the Lord” concept. Too many families are not Bible studying families. Until we draw more adults and young people into Bible study, the command to “Go and tell” will go unheeded. Our synodical goal has to be to get our people into the Bible! Gilbert R. Heine 1. I have served on this committee on four previous occasions. I know the procedure and I have a wide acquaintanceship throughout Synod and a knowledge of the qualifications required to serve on the various boards and commissions of Synod. 2. I rejoice in the fact that our Synod has moved beyond the in-fighting which charactertized the 1970s. Now wecan bring the full resources of this great Synod to the task which our Lord has given us in the Great Commission. 3. Wemust continue to confirm and affirm our mission and ministry based on the Scrip- tures and the Confessions. We must con- tinue to proclaim the Gospel message boldly without compromising the historic posi- tions of our past but with desire and the zeal that sees the words “Go ye” as a personal mandate to every member of our church body. Harold A. Kinas 1. I have served on District mission boards and a District board of directors plus Lutheran high boards in various Districts. This has given me some insight as to how the LCMS operates, and has whetted my desire to serve faithfully. 2. It is good to see us regaining our conserva- tive stance once again and growing at the same time—truly a sign from God about our direction. It’s even better to see our mission opportunities expanding even as some areas are gaining sister-church status— God be praised. 3. Synod should continue to search out ways to preach the Word to allin whatever ways are possible, both in the U.S. and abroad. It should foster sound doctrine in its colleges and seminaries as well as in local parishes. It should assist in supportive services to help parishes carry out the Great Commis- sion at the local level. It should first and foremost be the Bible preaching church! Edgar N. Roth 1. Ihave served in three synodical Districts. I have served as an officer in various capaci- ties. I was a teacher delegate to the 1969 Denver synodical convention. In these three Districts I have encountered quite a few people. 2. That we’re once again using our energies in doing the Lord’s business. I am overjoyed at the evangelism movement in Synod. 3. Greater outreach; getting an evangelism program intoevery congregation. Let’s also expand the role of the Christian day school. Ronald J. Seibert 1. Being in administration I have had to evaluate people both as teachers and as candidates on various call lists. I feel this experience would aid me in doing the jobon the nominating committee. 2. Oneof my greatest joys is Synod’s efforts to reach unbelievers, for that moves us closer to that day when the Gospel is preached 3. 337 throughout the world and our Lord will come again. It is very sad to note that a recent major survey showed that only about one-fourth of Lutherans in the U-S. believe that the Great Commission is important. In my opinion there is nothing more important in the church than reaching and feeding all peoples of the world. Therefore, Synod should press on in whatever programs are most important for outreach to unbelievers. Lawrence E, Sohn 1. Service on 1978—79 convention nomina- tions committee gave insight to organiza- tion and amount of work this committee requires. Advisory delegate/floor commit- tee membership for Dallas convention offered background in synodical workings, as have a great variety of activities on the District level over a 20-year period. . Greatest joys: that Synod holds faithfulness to Scripture in high regard while yet attempting to strive for a valid fellowship with other Christians. A growing awareness of need to reach minorities with the Gospel. Greatest disappointment: Lack of financial support from individuals, congregations, and Districts, which blunts efforts to get the Word out. . (a) Thank God for His grace in preserving the Gospel to us. (b) Do all that we can to serve spiritual and physical needs of minorities and people around the world who don’t know theirSavior. (c) Strengthen faith and commitment of our present members. (d) Structure synodical organiza- tion to be as efficient as possible while carrying out these functions. Arthur P. Brackebusch 1. I have served three terms on Synod’s Board for Higher Education, the last term as chairman. . My greatest joy is our faithfulness to Scripture, and my greatest disappointment is our hesitancy to move through God’s open doors. . We should move aggressively with full con- fidence that God provides what we need to succeed at His work. Anamelia Eden 1. 2. 3. Only by the grace of God do I qualify for such a tremendous responsibility. To be fair and just, I pray God for an open heart, open mind, and open ears to His Word and those of my fellowmen. Prayerful consider- ation for all and I pray God’s guidance to those elected. My continued interest in LWML and Synod privileges me to work with dedicated Christians. Because! treasure my doctrinal background as a blessing of God, I want it shared with others. I’m pleased that Synod is endeavor- ing to move through doors that God is opening and that Forward in Remembrance will bring much to reality. Also that toler- ance and understanding are keeping other doors open. The Great Commission commands us to make disciples and to teach. An enthus- iastic evangelism program and dedicated mission and education endeavors should be at the top of Synod’s list for all ages and walks of life both here and abroad. Coopera- tion with other Lutheran agencies in mission and ministry to the total man should be pursued that stumbling blocks are not laid and good stewardship is exercised. Erwin Eichhorst 1. I have been a delegate to three synodical conventions, and through personal experi- ence and much reading I have come to know many people in our Synod. Six years of experience on my District’s Board of
