Iam told by many of my members and also fellow pastors in the District that they feel I have a very effective way of presenting God’s Word to motivate discipleship and stewardship of living. Our members do respond very well in the stewardship of giving. 2. The greatest disappointment is in the failure of the congregations of Synod to increase their contributions to Synod. We have been at a standstill for all too many years; in fact, in view of inflation we have been going down instead of up. The greatest joy is in fact that we are holding to sound doctrine of God’s Word. 3. One Word: Let’s move forward. Charles W. Keturakat 1. My past experiences as the executive secre- tary of Stewardship and Finance for the Oklahoma District as well as pastoral experiences for 33 years in both rural and urban parishes, I believe, under God’s grace, qualify me for the position. 2. One of my greatest joys is the respect my church has for the authority of God’s Word. One of my disappointments has been that we have had to limit some of our outreach with the Gospel of peace and pardon in Christ. 3. If we are to reach the world with the Good News in Christ, the only Savior, Bible study and personal evangelism must have top priority in our church. God has opened the doors, let’s walk through them with the Word. Beginning with our day schools, NOMINATIONS Sunday schools, and youth groups, and following through at every age level. These two emphases must have our most prayer- ful and positive attention. Roger O. Kohtz * 1. For the past 10 years I have been involved with corporate stewardship on the District level—the last four as board chairman. These four years have been good ones, financially, for the Michigan District, having reversed downward trends. We feel that the stewardship of time (especially that spent in worship) has grown and also talent, though that is harder to measure. 2. I rejoice in the resurgence of doctrinal integrity and a growing peroccupation with evangelism and missions. 3. We need to cultivate the concept of social ministry as a responsibility of Christian individuals. We need to increasingly harness and make use of the talents of our laypeople. We need to greatly amplify the Circuit meetings and ministry as the basic unit of the church at large. We need to encourage the sodality groups of ourchurch and to enable our Synod’s mission by pro- viding an income increase in excess of inflation. Hersey G. Mangels * 1. I feel the Lord has given me certain abilities and the privilege of serving Him as a teacher in our Lutheran school system. Part of my responsibility is not only to teach but also to serve my church wherever the opportunity arises. | have had experi- ence in the field of stewardship. 2. My greatest joy this past year was attending the 1979 synodical convention in St. Louis and seeing the unity that exists within our beloved Synod in spite of past differences. The Synod must continue to be unified by the work of the Holy Spirit and follow the inspired Word of God as the one and only true source of salvation. 3. Synod must continue to follow our Lord’s teaching—especially the great command to preach the Gospel to all nations—by estab- lishing missions wherever and whenever possible. As a responsible churchman I must be faithful to our Lutheran Confes- sions and the Scriptures in order to carry out the task given to me as a Christian and servant of the Word. I must support my church with my offerings, serve Him with my whole life, and pray for its success each day. Charles H. Ehm 1. I have always been active in the church, especially in the stewardship area. Part of this interest is because of my job as a banker. I have been on the stewardship board for many years and have been chair- man three different years. Also being a farmer one is very conscious of being a good steward of the soil. 2. My greatest joy of Synod is standing up for the true word and preaching it in its truth and purity. The theme “God Opens Doors” is great. 3. Preach the Gospel to all nations. Continue in getting the Word to all people—keep our members ever mindful of the need for mission work both at home and abroad. Vincent L. Meyer 1. I have been actively engaged in and con- cerned about the affairs of Missouri Synod for over 30 years, having served in my church (elder and stewardship), South Wisconsin District (board and special pro- jects), Synod’s Task Force, convocation, conventions, and on the stewardship board. 2. My great joy is the restoration of the sem- inaries to a position of Bible inerrancy and adherence to the Lutheran Confessions according to Scripture and The Book of Concord. I am still troubled, however, by the attitudes and broad interpretations of God’s Word by some pastors and congrega- tions in our Synod. 3. The leaders of Missouri Synod must join together in working to unite all congrega- tions in supporting and promoting an aggressive mission thrust in North America and throughout the world. To accomplish this goal, it will be necessary to challenge our pastors and congregations to pledge their help in bringing Christ to the nations with all the strength and energy we can gather, as the Lord of the church will provide. John W. Saxton lL — 2— 3.— Henry Sundermann 1. I have been a lay member of the Steward- ship Task Force of our South Dakota District. I have been on the Board of Elders of our congregation for many years and usually in charge of stewardship. I believe in tithing and highly recommend it. 2. Iam pleased that we again have the Word of God taught in our seminaries without doubt, but I do believe that we should be more strict with some of our Districts. 3. I believe we have failed to carry out the Great Commission of the Lord as we could, considering the wealth and intellect that we have. We have done considerable mission work but very little compared to our potential. I think weshould concentrate more effort on teaching the joy of giving to the children in catechism and Sunday school. ‘Forward in Remembrance” is a step in the right direction.
